Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Set in 1890 London, the story follows Holmes and Watson as they apprehend the serial killer and occult sorcerer Lord Henry Blackwood. After Blackwood is executed by hanging and pronounced dead by Watson, he shockingly appears to rise from the grave to resume his killing spree. Holmes must use his brilliant powers of deduction and physical combat skills to unravel a complex conspiracy involving dark magic, secret societies, and dangerous new technologies before England falls.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

Set in 1891, Europe is on the brink of war due to a series of seemingly unconnected bombings and assassinations. While the authorities blame anarchists, Sherlock Holmes connects the dots to a single mastermind: Professor James Moriarty, a brilliant but ruthless mathematician. The story kicks off right as Dr. John Watson is trying to get married and settle down. Holmes, deeply paranoid and living in squalor, drags a reluctant Watson into a globe-trotting mission—from London to Paris, and finally to a peace summit in Switzerland. Along the way, they team up with Madam Simza, a Romani fortune teller whose missing brother is a key pawn in Moriarty’s plot to instigate a world war and profit from his investments in munitions factories. The climax famously takes place at the Reichenbach Falls, culminating in a tense game of chess (both literal and metaphorical) between Holmes and Moriarty, where they mentally play out their final physical fight before it even begins.
